Black and dark grey granites are popular materials because the design work and lettering always show clearly. They allow intricate motifs and etchings to be copied exactly. It is also possible to hand etch photographs onto black granite which will never fade.

Both materials will not weather and are maintenance free. Where a memorial goes under a tree or near a hedge, they are both ideal as there is very little cleaning needed.

Incised and gilded letters are recommended on these materials.
