Churchyard memorials are unpolished to meet regulations laid down by the diocese of each county. Usually only a flower, cross or dove may be carved or etched onto the stone, but in certain cases other designs may be allowed. Granite memorials are much harder than the limestone or sandstone memorials and will be easier to clean if erected near a hedge or tree.
Incised and gilded letters can be used on the medium grey granites, and painted letters would be suitable on the softer stones and light grey granite.
